Staggering back to a hotel drunk as a skunk is a great way to spend a vacation, at least for me. But eventually the drunk muchies caught up to me, and I found a taco joint to satisfy my cravings, and I gotta tell ya, it hit the spot. Not knowing what this place was, I just gurgled out the first thing I noticed, 2 beef tacos with hot salsa. Grabbed them for about $5, then walked back to my hotel and ate them. The beef was cooked perfectly, a rarity for a taco joint, and the salsa stood out and lifted the whole taco to another level. The cheese and lettuce were a nice touch, and added texture to what would otherwise be a dry taco. Very moreish, and very flavorful, yet perfectly greasy....what you need after a night of partying.

Okay, if you're looking for a place to take a Prom date to, this isn't the place. However, Taco Boy has everything else to offer to the hungry customer. Some of my favorite items on the menu are: the tacos, tostadas, and the Super Wet meat and bean burrito. Classier than Taco Bell with three-times the taste, the food here does not taste fast-food-like (although it could be considered fast food). Tuesdays they offer a 99 cent menu and their homemade hot sauce is the best. Overall, the decor makes Taco Boy a dive, however the food makes it a 5 Star Restaurant.

There's always got to be one person that rips a place right. I see how someone gave thisplace a one star review. Come On. Pretty good food and decent portions for what you pay for here. I'll continue going back.

For those of us raised in the Grand Rapids area this is the resurrection of the infamous "Ole Taco". If you enjoyed Ole you will love Taco Boy. The offer the same environment and taste that Ole once served up to the masses. The first bite will trigger naustalgia and a smile to light up your face. If you get a craving for "4th Meal" try Taco Boy instead of the grossly overrated Taco Bell. The tacos are like no other in GR and the "Super Burrito" that is their claim to fame are the deservingly so.

Great wet burrito. It's all I ever get here, though I think they have some other menu items. The place could use a remodel, maintenance, or even just a cleaning, but the burrito is good enough that I don't really care. This is not a place to bring people. It's a place to go get your eat on.

  • Tom K.

Go for the wet burrito. Great stuff.

I'm a big fan of fast casual dining. These kinds diner/dive-type places often serve Cheap, Tasty, and Inventive meals (plus I don't have to fork out tip money!). Taco Boy achieves the first 2 adjectives. While on a sight-seeing tour of Grand Rapids, my friend, a native, highly recommended the place, so we stopped in for lunch. Its not surprising Taco Boy is popular with the locals for its moderately priced mexican food. I ordered a regular taco, which came in a hard shell with meat, cheese, and lettuce, and a spicy pork burrito with beans (which cost extra...). The taco was alright, but I wish it had been spicer. The pork in the burrito was probably the best part of the whole meal, using what they called green sauce gave it a really nice flavor. But for me, with its simple salsas, soupy refried beans, and average meat, Taco Boy's food lacked the flavor and spice that I have come to crave from our friends south of the border. If you live in or near GR, definitly try Taco Boy, they offer cheap, filling meals that are better than Taco Bell or Del Taco. However, they are still miles away from the corn tortilla mexican street tacos of Detroit.

I was born and raised in Grand Rapids, and lived only a mile or two away from Taco Boy. There was probably a time in my life that my family would get take-out from Taco Boy once a week. Are they authentic Mexican? No. Is the food amazing and I eat there AT LEAST once every time I go back to Grand Rapids? YES. Their refried beans are the bar by which I judge all refried beans. They are amazing. I could eat them every day. I wish I was eating them right now. The taco meat, I honestly don't know how they make it so tasty. My favorite things to get there are a taco meat burrito and the regular tacos. Then I order a side of beans, and slather it on the tacos or stick it inside the burrito and re-wrap it. (You can get a taco meat and bean burrito, but you will get less meat that way.) The interior of the restaurant hasn't changed for the 25 years I've been going there. Its old, but not grody. If you go in a month before any holiday, they will have some cheapy decorations up everywhere. There are always high school students working at the front. "No Shirt No Shoes No Service" and a doorbell will greet you as you walk in the door. There are only four booths and two small tables so you better be there for take-out. I hope none of this ever changes. If they ever remodel it will just not be the same. Anytime I visit GR now I drag everyone in my group to Taco Boy. I will then unashemedly drag them there again on the way out of town. If they don't like it, too bad, I'm driving. If I ever drove up to Grand Rapids and found that they were closed, I would probably just break down right there and cry. (And then I'd drive to the Alpine one....) Go to Taco Boy. Its cheap, fast, and delicious. If you don't love it, well, I don't think we could ever be friends.

Place gets five stars because its a great place to go when you have a late night craving for ChocoTacos... and the best part is they are under $2 unlike at 7/11

Sorry, I was so not happy with Taco Boy. Yes, very tacky. Quality of food? Hardly edible. I know...harsh... but really its not good. I'm sorry... The food does not look like it would be good nor is it good. It definitely falls into the classification with all the other bad hangover/drunk foods...

  • Dawn B.

I can honestly say that I have been going to Taco Boy my entire life. I remember going as a kid and I still stop by whenever I'm visiting my family in Grand Rapids. It's great hangover food and you can't beat the prices. Having been to Mexico several times however, I can say that this is about the most unauthentic Mexican food I've ever had. That's ok. It's what I've dubbed, "Michigan Mexican". It's basically a loose interpretation of what folks in Michigan imagine Mexican food to taste like. While the food is pretty dependable, I'd like to take a moment to comment on the restaurant itself. The place is a dive. Not in that cool, kind of funky way, but in the wobbly seat, tacky menu board, and one step away from being closed down by the health department way. I'm quite certain they've opened other locations throughout the city, so I'm just not sure why their first born has been so sadly neglected.

I love this place. Wet all-meat burritos with everything is what I usually go with. Make sure that you get the hot sauce with it. It makes a great meal at a great price!!!!

Tacky and dive-like? Yes. Thoroughly un-Mexican food? For sure. Do I care? No. Leaving my mother's home in EGR and heading back up to Traverse City means that in approximately two-and-one-half hours I will be eating either a wet burrito or dry burrito with mild sauce in the comforts of my home. I can lick the wet burrito sauce from the plate without embarrassment; I can groan and moan in gastronomic pleasure. Taco Boy is without a doubt one of my favorite meals from Grand Rapids. It is not gourmet, it is not authentic, and it is served in environmentally-unaware styrofoam, but balls to it all! Taco Boy is just plain good. Gloriously and unpretentiously tasty. Now, why can't other Mexican-American joints (hear me, La Senorita??) serve up some decent gringo food? PS: I also loves me some gen-u-ine Mexican and Latin American! But we can't always be Anthony Bourdains now, can we?

    (4)
  • Bob V.

I eat here at least once a week everything is real good. The super wet burrito is excellent, whole made hot sauce is awesome. Tacos are great, kind of a whole in the wall, try takeout.

Classic taco shop. Good quality, strange pricing structure, old time feel and a definite destination when I'm in the area. Especially Tuesday's, which offer tacos, tostadas, rice and beans and more for $1.10 ea.

  • Kyleen K.

Is it the most authentic taco i have ever had? No, but good luck with that in the Midwest. Are they the most delicious taco Tuesday specials I have ever had? Yup! While the menu is lacking in range, the few items it offers are done well, pretty fresh, and stay consistent. No frills, just get your cheap tacos and get out to go savage in the privacy of your own home.

  • Amy M.

Man this place is always packed - it doesn't seem to matter what day of the week or what time I stop in, that little place is just packed! They have great specials and I often crave the chips n cheese deluxe! What else can I say? Great food - if you haven't eaten here you should!!!

Love Taco boy. Been a part of my diet since college in Mount Pleasant. Great tacos at great prices. Good burritos and my favorite, the super combo dinner. Taco boy serves great tacos, at a great price, and everything on the menu is good eats.

I eat here about every week, mainly because I'm addicted to the red all meat burrito, especially the great hot sauce I pour all over it. I have to admit I never expected this place to be so good, but it really is. Haven't tried much else on the menu, the enchiladas are pretty good. Just remember to the get home made hot sauce in the little plastic cups.

  • Steve N.

Excellent as always. The hardshell tacos are the best around and if u get them when they run a special it's only a buck a taco. We also got the beef enchilada and a chicken tamale and both were fantastic. The staff was courteous and we will definitely be back. Thanks!

Taco Boy will forever be my favorite place to get tacos. They are always delicious and use REAL ingredients. Every time I go in, the place is busy and serving up great food. I haven't had a bad experience there yet!

  • Aja W.

I had my first taco there a decade ago during first break at Chic University of Cosmetology. I remember thinking, "How much extra do I have to pay for tomatoes? I thought those came standard on a taco," and "When will this hangover release me?" At first, my interest in Taco Boy was a cynical joke. The sign is so bad, it's good. The menu is a light box displaying photos of their meal deals. Over time, these details have become mere fibers in the fabric of my life. Perhaps it was fate, but when I moved into my first home, it was located a short five minute drive from this establishment. I think they are saving money on their menu sign by providing strange pricing like 37 and 21 cents for various additions to these bleak tacos.

I don't live in Grand Rapids anymore (or for right now), but after I drop my stuff at my dad's, this is my next stop EVERY time. It's not traditional, but oh so tasty. My favs are the mini wet and taco dinner.

If I had only 8 words to describe the food at Taco Boy, I believe my review would be "The shittiest Mexican restaurant I've ever eaten at." Luckily there are no restrictions on telling you how broken and subpar this rotten excuse for an eatery is. I feel the easiest way of doing this, without writing a novel, is to list my observations in order of observance. 1. The building looks like hell 2. They have no avocado. In my opinion, this is a sign that they cater to white trash assholes. I can't give you specifics of why I think this, I just do. 3. They microwaved my quesadilla opposed to actually, you know, cooking it fresh. 4. They had zero employees working who appeared to be of Hispanic descent. This isn't a deal breaker... if I'm eating at Taco Bell. 5. Taco Bell has better tasting food. I hate you, Taco Boy, fuck off!

    (1)
  • Adam G.

Taco Boy is a GR staple. Their food is always made to order, so you know it is fresh. The menu is what I like to refer to as American Mexican food, and not very traditinal. Not that it is a bad thing. You have your traditional ground beef tacos and burritos. The wet burrio sauce is very flavorful. I'd suggest it if you can afford the calories. The hot sauce is great as well. Get there early for lunch because seats are limited in the small cozy place.

I eat here at least once a week everything is real good. The super wet burrito is excellent, whole made hot sauce is awesome. Tacos are great, kind of a whole in the wall, try takeout.

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.
